SLC Home Teacher Education Program
The Teacher Education Program is rooted in a Franciscan vision that fosters mutuality, equality and respect of all learners.  This undergraduate program strives to prepare effective teachers through a competency-based curriculum that builds on the foundation of the liberal arts studies and prepares teacher candidates to teach all students in today's classrooms.

EDU 162 Orientation to Teacher Education (1 credit)
EDU 163 Educational Foundations (3 credits)
EDU 164 Cultural Diversity and the Liberal Arts (2 credits)
EDU 260 Psychology of Development and Learning (4 credits)
EDU 261 Differences in Development and Learning (4 credits)
EDU 262 Curriculum and Methods (2 credits)
SED 300 Educational Measurement and Assessment (2 credits)
EDU 360 Teaching of Reading and Writing (3 credits)
SED 400 Classroom and Behavior Management (3 credits)
SED 460 Adaptations and Modifications for Learning (2 credits)
EDU 464 Issues in Education Seminar (1 credit)

Criteria for Admission to Teacher Education

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5
  • Passing scores in math, reading and writing components of the PPST
  • Background Verification
  • Personal Interview
  • Recommendation of the Teacher Education Committee

Criteria for Admission to Student Teaching

  • Formal application
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
  • Successful clinical experiences
  • Health information
  • Personal interview
  • Recommendation of the Teacher Education Committee
  • Passing score on the Praxis II exam

Degreed students seeking initial certification must complete the undergraduate core course requirements, or an accelerated sequence of core courses, as well as clinical and student teaching field placements.  Degreed candidates must also complete all requirements for chosen levels and/or major and minor areas of certification.
