Captain Michael Bero '80 HonoredMichael_Bero_crop_2_edited.jpg

We are proud to announce that Silver Lake College alumnus Captain Michael Bero ('80) of the Brown County Senior Squadron was chosen as the State Aerospace Education Teacher of the year for the Wisconsin Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.  He also won the Regional Aerospace Teacher of the Year award. The awards were presented at the Wing Conference on April 16, 2016.  He is now in the running for National Aerospace Teacher of the Year award.

Mike has been teaching since 1980 and has worked in the Green Bay Public Schools since 1987. He has used Aerospace Community Education lessons in his 6th grade science classes at Lombardi Middle School in Green Bay for the past five years. One lesson he enjoys teaching is the "payload package development and drop," utilizing packing materials to protect dropped eggs.  The students have been quite successful in keeping their "eggstronaut" safe for reentry. He has also started an after-school aviation club.

Mike Joined the Civil Air Patrol in September 2009 as an Aerospace Education Member. He was awarded an Air Force Association grant in December 2009 and purchased 20 small remote controlled helicopters to help teach aerodynamic principles to several groups of science students. He earned his Light Sport Aviation pilot's license. Mike joined the Brown County Senior Squadron in July 2012 as a senior member.
