Men's Basketball Team Fares Well in Scrimmages

November 5, 2007 - The Silver Lake College Men’s Basketball team hosted two scrimmages this past weekend at the UW-Manitowoc. The first of the two scrimmages was against the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders. The Crusaders came out on top of the Lakers in a hard fought battle by the score of 56-53. No stats were available for this scrimmage.

The second scrimmage was an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday. Head Coach Scott Farr coached the Royal team and the Silver team was coached by Assistant Coach Tod Hauf. The Royal team won the contest 71-53. Leading scorers for the Royal team were Willie Howard with 17, Brent Anderson had 16, Robert Gutke and Demetrius Shaw each chipped in 15 and 13 each while Josh Withers grabbed a game high 13 boards for the Royal team.

Leading the scoring for the Silver team was Paul Benson with 17, Toushane Evans added 14 points and led the Silver team with 11 boards and Richard Kelly chipped in with 10 points and 10 boards.

Coach Farr comments:
“I felt we did a nice job against Maranatha on Friday by keeping ourselves in the contest. We just need to clean a few things up on the offensive end and sharpen our defensive tenacity.”

“I thought the Royal did a great job on Saturday of taking care of the basketball and setting the tempo offensively and defensively. The Silver team showed me some flashes of brilliance at a couple spots. I now know where our depth will come from for the first few games.”

The Lakers travel to UW-Fox Valley in Menasha, WI on Wednesday night for their first regular season game. Game time is 8 pm. The Lakers will return for their home opener on Saturday, November 10th afternoon at 3 pm when they take on Moody Bible Institute.

This is the first time in almost 30 years that Silver Lake College has fielded a men’s basketball program. The last attempt was in the late 1970’s and the legendary Mickey Crowe was a member of the squad with his father Marty Crowe serving as the head coach.

For more information about the scrimmages or any other games please contact Coach Farr at (920) 686-6155.

Men's Basketball Head Coach Named

December 4, 2006 - After more than 20 years of intercollegiate competition in women’s basketball, Silver Lake College is expanding its athletics program to include a new men’s basketball program. Though the team will begin competing in the Manitowoc Recreation League during the Spring 2007 term, it will move into intercollegiate play in the 2007-2008 academic year.

Scott Farr, a native of Wausau, WI, has been named Head Coach of the new team. With more than ten years of experience, Farr has coached at various levels in Wisconsin from high school to college basketball. He coached varsity basketball teams at Tigerton, Bowler, Turtle Lake and Chippewa Falls high schools and was the head coach at Turtle Lake and Bowler. Farr served as an assistant coach for both UW-Marathon and UW-Eau Claire Men’s teams. Also, he was involved in AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball; forming and coaching Webko Sports of Wausau and the Wisconsin Inferno. Farr has taught at both the elementary and high school levels at public and private schools throughout the state, and he is currently kindergarten teacher at Valders Elementary School.

Alumni Basketball Game

November 17, 2006 - The 2006-2007 Silver Lake College women's basketball team, having started the season with considerable bench depth and the return of some key players, too, took time to scrimmage with an alumni squad and have some fun. Coach Mike Flentje thinks they may have picked up some shooting tips as well. Among the former Silver Lake College players were four (4), college career thousand point scorers joined by another who now serves as an assistant coach for the 2006 Lakers team. Shown left to right in the pre-game photo are Silver Lake College alums, Karen Schleis, Lindsay Rozmarynoski, plus Sue Pitroski (the current assistant coach who, following an outstanding high school performance for Manitowoc's Lincoln High School went on the become a 1,000 point scorer at UWGB), Mary Krall and Jamie Wernecke. Other alumni all stars also welcomed back were; Char Barclay-Wilson, Stefanie Curtiss and Shanna Robinson.

Women's Basketball Coach Named

July 5, 2006 - Mike Flentje, a well known women’s basketball coach in the Lakeshore Area, has been hired as the new coach for the Silver Lake College program. For seven years he led the varsity team at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc and during that time established the girl’s Junior Ship’s basketball program. In all he has twenty three years experience coaching young women, fourteen at the high school level amassing a 209-88 win-loss record. This is Flentje’s first college assignment.

“It is an honor to be named Head Basketball Coach for the Silver lake College Women’s Basketball Program,” said Flentje. “I have been coaching basketball for nearly 30 years, gaining experience at every level from grade school to head varsity coach for division one high school. It is truly a privilege to have an opportunity to coach at a college with a rich women’s basketball tradition. My passion and love for the game will continue to help build and maintain this great basketball program. We are looking for young ladies that also have a passion, desire and commitment to play the game at a higher level at Silver Lake College.”
