English Programs
The courses in English enhance students’ ability to
- communicate orally and via writing,
- think creatively and critically, and
- synthesize knowledge.
The courses in literature include study of authors across various periods, cultures, and genres so that students may
- acquire an appreciation for and an understanding of significant literary movements in their own cultural heritage,
- comprehend the relationships between history, literary form, and identity, and
- appreciate multi-cultural and global concerns.
Careers and Internships
Employers routinely list good written and verbal communication skills as a primary consideration when hiring new candidates. English Majors and Minors excel at these abilities; therefore, English graduates often easily find employment in the business world as well as in fields that are more often associated with English. The English Department encourages its students to have an internship to gain professional expertise with language and writing.
