The Department of Music at Silver Lake College enjoys a coveted reputation for excellence and scholarship. It offers a wide variety of degree and certificate programs, both undergraduate and graduate, and is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the premier accrediting organization in the US for music. Silver Lake College is the only college/university in the country to establish an undergraduate Kodály Concept of Music Education concentration.
The graduate music programs at Silver Lake draw students from every state and many foreign countries. In summer 2011, there were 75 students from 15 states and 4 foreign countries, namely, Ireland, Indonesia, Belgium and Singapore that studied aspects of the Kodály Approach to Music Education at Silver Lake College. The graduate programs in Kodály Music Education are fully accredited by the national body, the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE). Furthermore, major universities across the US accept Silver Lake's graduate music credits toward graduate degrees on their campuses.
NASM standards and requirements for membership are challenging and prestigious. Other accrediting agencies including the National Council for Accreditation in the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) standards for music in Wisconsin accept the recent comprehensive NASM on-site visit and review as satisfying their accrediting requirements.
The dedicated and highly qualified faculty members have gained the respect of local, regional, national and international colleagues through their outstanding teaching and performing. The entire staff is committed to excellence in the instruction of choral, instrumental, and general music and preparing students for their future in music.
