Organizations

Concert Choir
The Concert Choir, an SATB Chorus, is made up of students and some community members who love to sing. Along with the Chamber Singers, the Concert Choir hosts and performs at the Annual Madrigal Dinner in late November or early December each year. The gala event features Renaissance choral music; singers are costumed, serve table, and sing through the two hour-plus event. In the Spring Semester, the Concert Choir performs a variety of choral selections in the Spring Choral Concert. The group rehearses on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:45; students register for one credit (MUS160). Full time students can receive a Performance Scholarship each semester, upon faculty recommendation.
Chamber Singers
The Chamber Singers perform with the Concert Choir in hosting and performing at the Annual Madrigal Dinner near the end of the Fall term, and in the Spring Choral Concert, presented near the end of the Spring term. At the Madrigal Dinner, the Chamber Singers form the Royal Court and are seated at the head table during the banquet meal. In the Spring Choral Concert, the Chamber Singers perform a variety of musical styles from Renaissance through contemporary. The group rehearses for one hour on Monday and Wednesday each week of the semester beginning at 12:00 noon. Students register for one credit (MUS162). Full time students can receive a Performance Scholarship each semester, upon faculty recommendation.
Wind Ensemble
Students who perform on any woodwind, brass, percussion or string instruments are invited to join the Wind Ensemble to create a wide array of musical offerings. The ensemble offers an opportunity for students who have played in band in high school or earlier to develop their skills and continue performing during their college years. The group performs many styles of music in both the Christmas and the Spring Instrumental Concerts. Some of the compositions are arranged specifically for the Silver Lake group, in order to match the difficulty of each part with the skill level of each player. The Wind Ensemble rehearses each Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:45 pm. Students register for one credit (MUS260). Full time students can receive a Performance Scholarship each semester, upon faculty recommendation. For more information contact: Professor Kelly Meyer, kmeyer@silver.sl.edu
Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble performs a variety of jazz styles and literature, many favorite tunes by well-known jazz musicians. Student musicians with moderate to excellent performance skills on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion, guitar, bass, or keyboard are invited to join the Jazz ensemble. The group meets for two hours each week and performs in the Christmas and the Spring Instrumental Concerts. Rehearsals are held from 9:00-10:50 on Friday mornings. Students register for one credit (MUS261); full-time students can receive a Performance Scholarship each semester, upon faculty recommendation. Yearly Performances

Madrigal Dinner
The Madrigal Dinner is a musical re-enactment of a courtly Christmas banquet in Renaissance England presented in Generose Hall on the Silver Lake College campus. All musicians are dressed in period costumes and present a variety of musical venues from solo singing and trios or quartets, to larger ensembles and the entire cast of Concert Choir and Chamber Singer members. The singers are joined by the Recorders by the Bay (8 members), a Celtic Harpist and Harpsichordist (Ms Sandra Stevens of the Music faculty), and the UW-Sheboygan Chamber Singers, all under the direction of Dr. Dan Vander Linden, Professor of Choral Music at Silver Lake College. The meal is catered by Garnishes of Manitowoc and with trumpet fanfare, is served by the court musicians. A number of actors and the all-present jester intersperse the singing and the meal with Renaissance humor! A night to remember!
Artist Music Series
The Music Department presents a number of professional guest artists of outstanding performance reputation to perform Sunday afternoon (3:00) concerts in the college Chapel for Silver Lake students and personnel as well as for music lovers from the surrounding area. Learn more >>
Student Recitals
All music majors present a sophomore and a senior recital on their major instrument or voice. The senior recital is approximately 1 hour of music prepared in the applied lessons which are required of all music majors. The sophomore recital is approximately 30 minutes in length. Student recitals are milestones that show the level of musical performance ability and maturity each student has reached. Relatives, friends, and the general public are invited to these recitals; no ticket is required.
Music Organization Performances
Besides the annual Madrigal Dinner, the choirs prepare and perform a Spring Choral Concert. The Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble perform a complete concert for the end of each semester as a means to demonstrating all that each member has achieved through the group rehearsals of the semester. These concert are the final assessment for the members of each ensemble; they include music of many styles and levels of difficulty.
