Minor in Family Services
The Family Services Minor is an interdisciplinary program,
which provides a beginning in the search for professional
competence in understanding, guiding, and working with families,
as well as an opportunity for students to choose coursework that
is relevant to their own family responsibilities. It emphasizes
the interaction of families with social institutions in our
changing society, family relationships and decision-making, and
the dynamics of parenting. In addition, courses in this minor have
been approved by the state of Wisconsin to count towards the
course requirements for the Social Work Training Certificate.
The History and Social Sciences Department is currently
participating in a state certification program in which students
with undergraduate majors in a social science (e.g., psychology,
sociology) may earn credit and experiences that will allow them to
become social workers in the state of Wisconsin. The Social Worker
Training Certificate Program requires that a student successfully
complete four courses that pertain to social work. The Wisconsin
Department of Regulations and Licensing has approved Silver Lake
College to offer these courses as part of the Social Worker
Training Certificate Program. The student must also complete a
state-approved internship (may be full-time, paid work) and
complete state and federal exams. For more information on this
program, call the Social Sciences and History Department or visit
the
Wisconsin Department of Regulations and Licensing.
