Admission Requirements
Degree with Licensure:
All Candidates
Meet Division of Graduate Studies requirements plus the Special Education Program requirements relative to your status.
Undergraduate Candidates
Silver Lake College students who have reached senior status, obtained the
required 120 credits for graduation, and met the general graduate admission
requirements may apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Special Education.
To apply candidate must:
- Complete Graduate Special Education Program application.
- Have overall grade point average of 3.0 (Grade of “B” or better).
- Submit letters of recommendation from three (3) professional educators who have observed the student in professional and/or classroom situations. These may include current instructors and clinical or student teaching supervisors.
- Submit a written essay which addresses a current topic in special education (maximum of three pages.) This essay must follow APA format and give evidence of competency in writing and knowledge of current issues and research. Guidelines and rubric are available from Admissions. Request an application and information packet for the Graduate Special Education Program.
- Submit a portfolio of teaching experiences and evidence with children/youth with special education.
- Have access to children/youth with special education needs.
Post-Baccalaureate Candidates
Licensed and non-licensed professionals may apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Special Education. To apply candidate must:
- Complete Graduate Special Education Program application.
- Have an overall 3.0 (“B”) grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
- Submit letters of recommendation from three (3) professional educators.
- Submit written essay which addresses a current topic in special education (maximum of three pages.) This essay must follow APA format and give evidence of competency in writing and knowledge of current issues and research. Guidelines and rubric are available from Admissions. Request an application and information packet for the Graduate Special Education Program.
- Submit a photocopy of a current teaching license (if applicable).
- Have access to children/youth with special education needs.
Non-Degree with Licensure
Students seeking licensure only and want to take the special education licensure courses for graduate credit must:
- Have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Complete a Graduate Special Education Program application.
- Provide evidence of undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Submit transcript of prior coursework.
- Submit a photocopy of current teaching license (if applicable).
- Have access to students with special education needs.
- Follow the Special Education licensure requirements for program and program completion.
Non-Degree without Licensure
Students must:
- Have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Provide evidence of an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Submit transcript of previous courses.
Students who want to take courses for professional development at the graduate level should:
- Follow college procedures for application; students who have not previously taken a course at Silver Lake College must complete an application form and pay a one-time, non-refundable application fee.
- Fill out a course registration form. Advance registration is recommended.
