Introduction

SLC Licensure Modules provide, via web based instruction, the general special education competencies and the introductory courses in each of the specialty areas required for licensure in Cognitive Disabilities(CD), Emotional Behavioral Disabilities (EBD), and Learning Disabilities (LD) for licensure in the State of Wisconsin.

Non- licensed teachers.

The Silver Lake Licensure program consists of two approaches for licensure in special education, traditional and modular.

The traditional approach is undergraduate students or those who do not have a teaching license.  These student must meet all of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction requirements for an initial license.  This approach provides course work in the traditional format with two and three credit courses.  These courses are offered evenings and Saturdays on the Silver Lake College campus.  See the Special Education Licensure Program for specifics.

Licensed Teachers

The Silver Lake College modular approach provides general special education cross-categorical competencies for licensure in the areas of Emotional Behavioral Disabilities, Learning Disabilities and Cognitive Disabilities. These  modules are available on campus or in an interactive distance learning delivery format. The modules do not address all of the competencies required for special education licensure in the state of Wisconsin.  There are traditional courses and application components needed to complete the licensure requirements.

-The modules are primarily for:

licensed special education teachers who have teaching experience and are adding a second special education license or  knowledge and skills for teaching in cross categorical programming environment in CD, EBD and LD.

licensed regular education teachers who have teaching experience and are adding a second license in special education

- The modules are concise presentation of the knowledge, skills and dispositions addressed in traditional two or three credit college courses.  A one or two credit module does not equate to a one credit traditional college course or a workshop or seminar.  Teachers who enroll in the modules must have prior knowledge and experience.  If teachers do not have the prior knowledge and experience which would reduce the amount of study or research, it is recommended that they take traditional courses.

Required modules or courses for categorical licensure may be available via distance learning, but students cannot complete the entire certification program at this time via distance learning. Travel to the campus for seminars and portfolio presentations will be required. A student teaching and/or a field based experience is also required. These decisions are made individually based on the demonstrated level of mastery of the competencies.

Distance Learning

The general special education cross-categorical core competencies and the introductory categorical competencies are available in a web based module format for licensed teachers who are adding a second license, or seeking professional development knowledge and skills.

At this time the modules are offered during the traditional college calendar - fall, spring and summer and follow a sequential schedule.

Enrolled students would access the module via the web.  The on-line module provides an outline of the major concepts with definitions, examples or learning resources. A text book and other resources will be required.  Information in each module is organized according to units which support the major concepts. Each unit has  discussion topics and learning activities.  Instructors will determine the specific requirements for participation in the use of the web for submitting course requirements and participating in on-line discussions.

The use of a Learning Contract, which must be completed by each student before beginning the class, will determine the time lines and communication methods
