Special Education
The Special Education Department offers cross-categorical licensure programs at the elementary and secondary levels with sub categorical emphasis in the areas of:
Students in the Bachelor of Science Degree undergraduate program will also complete all course work for licensure in elementary general education, or a certifiable content area at the secondary level.
Programs are designed specifically for traditional students, and in a special program format for adult learners and professionals who wish to expand their knowledge and skills. A competency-based approach promotes opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate proficiency in the skills needed to be a special educator. A portfolio process demonstrates professional growth.
Teacher Education Program
The Silver Lake College competency-based Teacher Education Program collaboratively endeavors to prepare educators who embrace teaching that is accommodating to all dimensions of human diversity. Built on a strong foundation of liberal arts studies, the integrated curriculum for pre-service teachers incorporates:
- traditional and current views of teaching and learning
- core of knowledge, performance skills and dispositions, and
- multiple opportunities to work with diverse populations.
