Students may use these courses as electives in the master of arts degree program.  Students desiring to obtain the license without pursuing the master of arts degree simultaneously must have a total of twelve (12) credits at the graduate level.

Empowering Reading Teachers through 316 Reading Licensure Program

As a child, Matthew Slattery struggled to get through a Charlie Brown book. He remembers having difficulty understanding his sixth grade social studies textbook. Matthew says the feeling of inadequacy followed him for a long time, dogging him even as an adult.

The Two Rivers Public School District teacher and graduate of Silver Lake College’s 316 Reading Licensure Program had an a-ha moment that allowed him to see the reason for his childhood struggle with reading. “It all clicked into focus,” Matthew says of the epiphany he had while helping a student whose struggles with reading reminded him of himself. “Everything I went through as a struggling reader, all of the humiliation and its inner torture, all of the training and education I received in my Reading 316 classes, all of it fell into place…I was put in that classroom with my past and my training as a reading teacher at that very moment so I could say to that student, ‘…You are at your own level and that’s okay. Everyone here is at different levels. Let me get you some books that I know you will love to read.’”

Matthew, who holds a teaching degree from Silver Lake College and a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is one of several area teachers who credit the 316 program with enabling them to achieve their professional goals as educators and lifelong learners.

The 316 program consists of four courses that prepare K-12 teachers to assess literacy and to develop, implement, and adapt curriculum to all reading styles. The courses are offered in a format meant to accommodate the professional responsibilities of teachers: the first two courses (Developmental Reading PreK-8 and Developmental Reading 6-12) are offered consecutively for one week each during the summer. The third and fourth courses in the sequence, Diagnosis of and Response to Exceptional Reading and Developmental Reading Practicum, are offered in fall and spring, and meet one Saturday per month. Courses are available both on campus and through Interactive TV. All four courses are taught by Assistant Professor and Reading Specialist Christine Rettler.

Annemarie Ahola is a reading specialist at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Elementary School and a reading teacher at Roncalli High School in Manitowoc. Like Matthew Slattery, Annemarie acknowledges the 316 program for giving her “many tools and countless resources to become a teacher who can make a difference in the lives of children who need alternative ways in learning to read.”

Annemarie, a graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, earned her 316 Reading Licensure in March 2011 (one year after starting the program) and quickly began seeing results. “The students I teach each day are overcoming reading obstacles because of the knowledge that I was able to acquire through my classes at Silver Lake College,” she says, adding that the 316 program has helped her to become “an effective and valuable reading teacher.”

In addition to helping teachers achieve their goals, the license gives them an edge in the job market, according to several teachers who completed the program in the last two years. Dalena Swetlik, who earned her 316 Licensure in 2011, says, “[The program] helped me attain a position in the school I have always dreamed of teaching in. I am directly using my 316 license, since I was hired as a reading teacher for the elementary school.” Dalena, a teacher in the Mishicot Public School District and a Silver Lake College alumna, notes that the hands-on approach in the program’s capstone courses prepared her for her current position: “We were required to assess students using multiple assessments and determine their strengths and needs. We then created multiple lessons according to their needs and challenges and taught them one-on-one to enhance their learning.”

While teachers with two years of classroom experience may enter the 316 program with a goal of earning the license, lifelong learners may also apply these credits to graduate study. The credits earned in reading licensure courses may be applied as electives towards a Master of Arts in Education: Teacher Leadership degree at Silver Lake College.
