Men are Defeated by NCAA D-II Lake Superior State University
Yesterday the men’s basketball team traveled to Sault Ste. Marie and lost to a strong Lake Superior State University team out of the NCAA D-II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 92-55. Our Lakers played their Lakers toe to toe throughout the first half. Lake Superior State, who took NCAA D-I Central Michigan into overtime before falling a week earlier, jumped out to a 14-7 lead four minutes into the contest. However our Lakers went on a 9-0 run and took the lead 16-14 with thirteen and a half minutes left. Our Lakers extended the lead to 20-16 half way through the half before Lake Superior went on a 15-0 run to take the lead for good 31-20.
Our Lakers played very well but in the end it was Lake Superior’s outside shooting that made the difference. Our Lakers played strong interior defense and did a great job of controlling Lake Superior’s 6’10” and 6’8” post players. Lake Superior shot 48.5% from beyond the arc on 16 of 33.
Our Lakers were led in scoring by Junior John Duke with 15 points. The Lakers once again received solid performances from 6’5” Freshman Darius Barnes and senior guard Chris Jones. Darius scored 11 points to go with his game high 8 rebounds and Chris added 8 points. All nineteen Lakers saw action last night and they all continue to show marked improvement. Sophomore Tyler Wells scored 6 points, sophomore Kevin Ramirez and Junior Javaughn freeman each added 3 points. Junior Jonathon Billingslea, sophomore Anthony Parker, Junior Kyle Lundberg and Freshman DaVontae Fleming each contributed 2 points and Freshman Stevens Alexis rounded out the scoring with 1 point.
The Lakers play their next home game tomorrow night at the UW Manitowoc Fieldhouse against Lakeland College with a 7:00 pm tip. The Lakers next away game is this Saturday when they travel with the Lady Lakers to take on Purdue North Central University.
