PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH A MAJOR IN ACCOUNTING

The Accounting major provides a student with a sound foundation to pursue a career in public, private or governmental accounting. Theories and practices are mastered in an environment that promotes ethical decision-making.

Select courses required for this program are offered in traditional day and/or accelerated evening and weekend formats. Courses offered in the accelerated delivery format have specific entrance requirements and require foundation coursework.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will recognize basic theories and practices in the functional areas of business.
  2. Students will demonstrate effective communication skills — written and oral — by expressing to others the key concepts and methodologies of their chosen fields.
  3. Students will demonstrate competency in the use and application of standard business-related software: word processing and spreadsheets.
  4. Students will assess the legal and ethical consequences of decisions with which managers, leaders and practitioners in their chosen field are frequently confronted.
  5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of accounting theory.
  6. Students will use accounting software to solve accounting problems and interpret accounting information.
  7. Students will identify ethical consequences of decisions made by accountants.
  8. Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge of accounting required for professional certification or licensing in the field of accounting.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

PROGRAM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Acceptance into Silver Lake College of the Holy Family.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of one-third of the required courses must be completed through Silver Lake College of the Holy Family.
  • Accounting majors must take at least three upper-level accounting courses (ACC306, ACC311, ACC401, ACC402, ACC403, ACC404) through Silver Lake College of the Holy Family.

INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

  • A 2.5 GPA in the major courses taken at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family at the time fifty percent of the major courses required to be taken at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family have been completed.

PROGRAM EXIT REQUIREMENTS

  • A 2.5 GPA in the major courses. This major is comprehensive. No minor is required, but can be taken on an optional basis. However, if a minor is selected, it must not duplicate courses that are part of the business core common to Accounting majors and Business Management minors.
