PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Actuarial Science Program prepares students to pursue employment as an actuary. An actuary is the leading professional in managing risk; they work at insurance companies, private corporations, as consultants and for the government. This comprehensive major gives students a combination of strong analytical skills, business knowledge, and understanding of human behavior to manage today’s complex risks facing our society. It offers a sequence of rigorous courses that also will prepare students with sufficient depth for further study. Most importantly, the program will prepare students for the actuarial exams necessary to become certified through the Society of Actuaries.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will master the quantitative and analytical skills required to obtain an entry-level position in the actuarial science profession.
  2. Students will demonstrate the skills necessary for passing the professional actuarial exams.
  3. Students will attain a high level of proficiency in research methodology and computer technology.
  4. Students will recognize the economic significance and ethical impact of various business decisions.
  5. Students will develop strong communication and interpersonal skills.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

PROGRAM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • To be accepted into the Actuarial Science program at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, a student must be of sophomore standing and have a GPA of 3.0 of higher.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of one-third of the required courses must be completed through Silver Lake College of the Holy Family.
  • This major is comprehensive; no minor is required.
  • Students holding a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution may enroll in actuarial science courses to assist in passing the actuarial exams.

PROGRAM EXIT REQUIREMENTS

  • To complete the Actuarial Science program at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, a student must achieve the course requirements with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
