Reflection for the third week of Lent from Dr. George Arnold, President of SLC

I am focusing on the following passage from this gospel piece from Luke. It reads: “Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my chosen Son; listen to him.’ After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.”

I certainly can never imagine myself ever having such a dramatic encounter with the Lord that Peter, John and James experienced. Yet the message they heard was for me too. It has always been, is now and will continue to be my decision how I decide to respond to the Lord’s call even though I know the call for me has not been nor will it ever be as dramatic as what Luke describes in this gospel passage. So it is my responsibility to listen carefully for the Lord’s ever so gentle call. As I do so, I think of the words of John Cardinal Newman who wrote, “God Has Created Me To Do Him Some Definite Service.” In his passage Newman writes, “God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission-I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next.”
