Silver Lake College hosts Look Ahead Lakers Campus Visit Day Oct. 24

Posted on October 25 2013

Over 100 fifth graders from local elementary schools came to Silver Lake College on October 24th for the 2013 Look Ahead Lakers Campus Visit Day 24th. The day began with a rousing opening ceremony in Bob & Pat Endries Hall in the new Franciscan Music Center, and then the students broke up into small groups led by Silver Lake College student mentors to participate in actual college classes and learn about life on campus. Some of the goals of the program are:

  • To provide role models and mentors for students where the population is largely from low income families, underrepresented, or first generation (designated as Title I Schools)
  • To introduce students to the possibilities that exist for them if they stay in school and complete their education through high school
  • To help students realize that pursuing post-secondary education -college, technical school, apprenticeship etc., is a realistic and attainable goal
  • To help students improve academic skills and ultimately increase graduation rates among at risk students
  • To strengthen the College connection with the community and give Silver Lake College students an opportunity to serve the community and gain experience
